JOB SUMMARY

 

Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, and in accordance with standard departmental procedures, prepare medications for patient utilization.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Perform duties assigned by a licensed pharmacist. Areas of work are checked routinely for maintenance of quality control. Work is conducted in accordance with generally accepted standards of practice following departmental procedures and policies as outlined in the department operations manual.

Prepare unit doses, triage phone calls to decrease pharmacist interruption, prepare IV medications as per USP 797 and hospital policy and procedure, and label individual patient doses for dispensing to the nursing unit; work verified by licensed pharmacist.

Fill individual patient drug bins working from a medication fill list, record doses for credit or charge, acknowledge filling of batch.

Deliver batch and retrieve unused patient meds every 24 hours, transfer medications as necessary, process discharged patients’ credits for unused or discontinued drugs appropriately. Maintain that no medications are left behind in med cart for patients not serviced by that cart.

Pick up and deliver drugs; remove discontinued drugs from the nursing units

Respond to on demand calls for “STAT” orders, pick-up and deliver within hospital defined time frame.

Perform narcotic delivery to each nursing unit, be certain records are kept accurate. Make sure pharmacists are aware of any returns, so they are processed accordingly.

Prepare IV admixture ( IV piggybacks) under supervision of licensed pharmacist.

Prepare in accordance with standards of pharmacy practice compounds for inpatient (ex. Creams, Ointments, etc.) under direct pharmacist supervision.

Perform minimum of 1 nursing unit inspection to ensure proper IV stock and charges. Keep records appropriate. Communicate with Director of Pharmacy on such issues.

Using computer program, prepackage medications, which are not available in unit does packages using automatic prepackaging and label machine. Keep records appropriate for recall purpose.

Attend and participate in pharmacy tech meetings to exchange ideas in order to achieve goals of the department. Keep procedures up to date in pharmacy tech manual in order to train new personnel and have quick reference to specific jobs so they are performed according to the policies of the department.

Check and remove outdated meds on a routine basis to ensure that no deteriorated meds are in stock. Keep records appropriate.

Assist with billing by using appropriate computer function, reason codes and dates for charging and crediting as billing will need this information to be correct for reimbursement purposes.

Assist  with checking in orders, putting orders away and filing associated paperwork.

Assist with picking up and delivering associated supplies to various nursing units and support services throughout the hospital.

Continue education by attending drug in-services and keeping up with policy changes.

Maintain competency in caring for patients of all age groups and developmental stages, and maintain competency as specifically indicated by orientation guidelines for a particular unit.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATION (SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION)

 

High school diploma required

 

Certificate from approved pharmacy technician program

 

Registered through the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy

 

Able to work under stress and in emergency situations

 

Able to speak, read and write English

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Hospital experience preferred
