JOB SUMMARY
Assist patients with activities of daily living, provide basic nursing care to non-acutely ill patients, and assist in maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse in charge of the team and/or unit. Perform those tasks within scope of practice upon completion of clinical competency for the specific task.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assist in preparation of units, patient rooms and beds for receiving patient admissions, returning surgical patients, transfers, emergencies, or discharges.
Provide care for the adult or geriatric patient, ages 18 years and over.
Assist in and accompany patients in the admission, transfer and discharge procedures.
Assist in obtaining patients’ height, weight and vital signs during admission.
Provide post-mortem care and assist, as needed, in transport.
Provide morning and evening care, which may include bed bath, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patient, changing bed linen, cleaning over bed table and bedside stand, straightening room and other general care as needed.
Perform routine treatment procedures including application of appliances for heat and cold and sitz bath.
Assist staff Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Practical Nurse in complicated treatment procedures.
Prepare patients for meals, serve and remove food trays, and assist with meals or feed patients.
Provide general nursing care such as positioning patients; lifting and turning patients; applying/utilizing special equipment; assisting in use of bedpan, urinal or commode; ambulating the patient; pre-operative and post-operative care; and application of appliances, taking and recording blood pressure, TPR, patient weight, I & O and bowel elimination.
Perform quality controls on assigned glucometer and eyewash station during each shift.
Distribute drinking water and other nourishments to patients following infection control standards.
Perform general care activities for patients in isolation utilizing appropriate isolation standards of care.
Answer patient call lights, anticipate patients' needs, and make rounds to assigned patients.
Assist patients with handling and care of clothing and other personal property (including dentures, glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices) throughout their hospital stay.
Collect and transport specimens to the correct department utilizing applicable infection control and hazardous material standards.
Transport patients to and from various departments as requested.
Accurately report (and when appropriate, record) patient care and assessment data, or any changes observed in condition or behavior of patients and unusual incidents to the Registered Nurse responsible for the patient’s care.
Participate in and contribute to Nursing Care Plans.
Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment by cleaning utility rooms, cleaning equipment and preparing for disinfection or sterilization, reporting equipment that is out of order, reporting other problems to the Registered Nurse in charge, appropriate handling of clean and dirty linen, stocking PPE boxes, emptying sharp containers and store supplies on the unit.
Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors and other hospital personnel, while assuring confidentiality of patient information.
Attend in-service education programs, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills, etc.
Attends a minimum of five (5) scheduled staff meetings annually.
Complete all required annual competency skills and mandatory in-services/training classes.
Adhere to Hospital attendance policy, as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
Adhere to all components of the Hospital Compliance Plan in performing job duties and report any violations or suspected violations of the Plan to the Compliance Officer.
Demonstrate professional conduct and comply with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Practice careful, efficient and non-wasteful use of supplies and linen, and follow established charge procedure for patient charge items.
Participate in the Hazardous Material Program. Hazards include exposure to blood and body fluids, possible communicable diseases, sharp objects and instruments, assorted chemicals and gasses as listed in the Hazardous Materials Program Manual.
Comply with measures for preventing exposure to blood borne pathogens.
Comply with established Safety and Patient Safety Program practices.
Responsible for participation in Performance Improvement activities.
Develop an understanding of responsibilities for recognizing abuse and follow policy for making appropriate referrals/interventions.
Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by the Registered Nurse.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS (SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION)
High school graduate or GED equivalent
BLS certified
Able to work in high stress environment
Able to speak, read and write English
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Relevant, proven nursing or therapy experience in direct patient care
Ability to work in a demanding situation, changing focus of work due to changing priorities
